Gummy smile: too much gum shows when smiling

A gummy smile is when several millimetres of gum show as you smile. It can come from an upper lip that lifts a lot, a short lip, the shape of the teeth or the bone. When the cause is the lip muscle, a medical treatment in consultation can soften it; if it is dental or bony, we refer you to the dentist.

How we approach it

  • Injectable medical treatment of a gummy smile
  • Hyaluronic acid in the upper lip, if needed
  • Referral to the dentist when the cause is dental or bony

Frequently asked questions

Is the result permanent?

No. The effect of the medical treatment fades over the months and can be repeated. Dental or bone solutions are another route the dentist assesses.

Does it change the smile?

The aim is for the lip to lift slightly less, without losing a natural look. The doctor will explain the expected result in your case.

What happens at the information visit?

It is a first visit with the doctor, at no cost, where we listen to you, examine the area and explain which options make sense in your case. There is no commitment to start any treatment.
