Loss of facial volume and deep folds
With age the face loses volume in the cheekbones, the lips and the under eye area, and folds such as the nasolabial fold or marionette lines deepen. It is a gradual change that depends on each person's skin, bone and fat, and we assess it in consultation before proposing any treatment.

Hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid is a molecule found naturally in the skin, where it contributes to tissue hydration and volume. Its amount decreases with age. In aesthetic medicine it is used as an injectable gel to treat facial volume loss and deep folds.
Indications
It is used for nasolabial folds, marionette lines, volume loss in the cheeks and lips, hollow under-eye areas and some facial asymmetries. Each area needs a gel of a different density, which the doctor chooses after the assessment.
How it is done
The session starts with a facial assessment in which the doctor studies the patient's features, symmetry and expectations. Topical or local anaesthesia is applied and the gel is injected with a needle or a cannula. The session lasts between 20 and 40 minutes.
What to expect
After the session there may be swelling, redness or small bruises, which usually settle within a few days. How long the effect lasts depends on the area and the person: as a guide, between 9 and 18 months in the lips and somewhat longer in the cheeks. The doctor explains during the consultation which options exist if the outcome is not the one expected.
Who can be treated
Adults with volume loss or marked folds, after a medical assessment. It is not done during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with an active infection in the area. Like any medical procedure, it can carry risks and side effects, which the doctor explains before the informed consent is signed.
