Biostimulators
Biostimulators are injectable treatments intended to stimulate the skin's own collagen production, for firmness and skin quality. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, they act gradually.
Main types
Poly-L-lactic acid: it is reabsorbed by the body and is used for laxity and diffuse volume loss on the face, décolletage, arms or buttocks.
Calcium hydroxylapatite: it is used for facial volume loss, the jawline and laxity of the neck and hands.
Polynucleotides: they are used for thin or photo-aged skin and as a complement to other treatments.
How it is done
The protocol depends on the product. Generally between 1 and 3 sessions are advised, 4 to 6 weeks apart, with local anaesthesia for comfort.
What to expect
Changes are progressive and are assessed from 4 to 6 weeks and again at the third or fourth month. As a guide, the effect lasts between 18 and 24 months, depending on the product and the person. There may be swelling, bruising or small nodules, which the doctor reviews at follow-up. Like any medical procedure, it can carry risks and side effects, which the doctor explains before the informed consent is signed.
